Democratic Climate Bonds

People are disenchanted with government on climate action. 

Local governments are critical actors to addressing climate change. Cities contribute 70% of emissions, and also bear the greatest social and financial costs of climate change. While local councils may be eager to take action, they operate in a volatile world. With pressing current issues like the cost-of-living crisis, they often feel the do not have a mandate to target long-term issues like climate change. Additionally, councils can struggle to secure the necessary finance to undertake projects. 

In response to these barriers, we developed Bright Bonds as an innovative solution. By combining principles of green bonds and deliberative democracy, we can provide a roadmap for local governments to access funding while meaningfully engaging residents in decision-making. Democratic Climate Bonds aim to solve the disconnect between governments and citizens, ensuring that climate action is driven by collective intelligence, and building a robust case to attract the necessary financial support.
